Inception of 2-year Master degree programme in Clinical Embryology for the first time in Eastern and North-Eastern India✨
What greater solace can there be than commemorating the 95th birth anniversary of the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) pioneer Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhyay by unveiling Master of Science (MSc) programme in Clinical Embryology which aims to imbibe technical skills in field of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) to leverage emerging paradigms for successful IVF treatment regime (a scientific feat that was recognised by 2010 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine) as well as it’s manifestions like Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
The inaugural session of the 2nd International Conference on Advances in Reproductive Medicine (ICARM 2025), organised by GDIFR in collaboration with the Centre of Excellence in ART, IPGMER & SSKM Hospital, Government of West Bengal, and held at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Kolkata, on 6th December 2025, served as the curtain-raiser to this academic announcement.
Hon’ble Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Samit Ray, Adamas University (AU), along with Dr. Sudarsan Ghosh Dastidar, Director, GDIFR (Ghosh Dastidar Institute for Fertility Research), exchanged the MoU and proudly announced the launch of the AU-GDIFR M.Sc. in Clinical Embryology Course.
Notably, while the basic practical training shall be harnessed at the Subhash Mukhopadhyay Centre for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, a first of its ICMR-approved kind research centre utilizing human stem cells in Eastern and North-Eastern India that was inaugurated by 2009 Chemistry Nobel Laureate Prof. Ada Yonath, more advanced hands-on experise shall be inculcated at the GDIFR where the ICSI-mediated first Indian test tube baby and Asia’s first surrogate baby for a single father were born in 1996 and 2005 respectively.
🌟 Rolling out of this course, which is first of its kind in the eastern and north-eastern India, was promulgated in the esteemed presence of global leaders in reproductive medicine like Prof. Ri-Cheng Chian (Director, Center for Reproductive Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai) and
Prof. Thomas Ebner (Senior Clinical Embryologist, Kepler University, Austria), who shall be involved as guest lecturers and have agreed to facilitate bilateral student exchange programmes.
This collaboration marks a significant step forward in advancing education, research, and clinical excellence in reproductive medicine and embryology among these nations.
📘 Induction of this course heralds a new horizon for aspiring embryologists in Eastern and North-Eastern India which is especially pertinent in the light of recent empanellment of MSc in Clinical Embryology as the imperative pre-requisite degree to qualify as a trained clinical embryologist in ART.
